Backed by decades of professional experience, Mr. Miller serves as a University professor at the New York University School of Law. At the start of his career, he served in the United States Army and as an associate with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP. From there, Mr. Miller pursued a path in legal education, working for Columbia Law School at Columbia University in New York City, the Law School at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Michigan Law at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Harvard Law School at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Among lawyers, he is nationally known for his work on court procedure, a subject on which he has authored or co-authored more than forty books, and copyright and unfair competition. He has worked for decades on the multivolume Wright & Miller treatise, Federal Practice & Procedure, of which he is now senior co-author. He has also worked for many years in the field of the right of privacy, a subject on which he has written, testified, debated, and helped formulate legislation. His book The Assault on Privacy: Computers, Data Banks, and Dossiers (1971) has been extremely influential.

In recent years Professor Miller has taught courses on Civil Procedure, Copyright, Complex Litigation and Sports Law. Professor Miller also carries on an active law practice, particularly in the federal appellate courts. He has argued in all of the U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal and in the U.S. Supreme Court. He has worked in the public interest in the fields of privacy, computers, copyright, and the courts. Among the responsible positions he has held are those of Commissioner on the United States Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works (by appointment of President Ford), reporter for and member of the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules of the Judicial Conference of the United States (by appointment of Chief Justices Burger and Rehnquist), and Reporter for the American Law Institute’s Project on Complex Litigation.

Professor Miller was the host of the weekly television show Miller’s Court for eight years; he also wrote a book of the same name. He commented regularly on legal matters for Boston’s WCVB-TV for many years. Professor Miller has moderated numerous Socratic dialogues for several acclaimed PBS series, including The Constitution: That Delicate Balance, Managing Our Miracles: Health Care in America, and The Presidency; he won an Emmy award for The Sovereign Self. Professor Miller has also conducted programs in the British Hypotheticals series for many years. For over twenty years, he was the legal editor of ABC’s Good Morning America, and for several years he hosted a weekly program on the Courtroom Television Network and appeared frequently on other Court TV programs. Between 1987 and 1989 he moderated the nationally syndicated issues program Headlines on Trial. Miller is the recipient of numerous awards, including eight honorary doctorates, three American Bar Association Gavel Awards and a Special Recognition Gavel Award for promoting public understanding of the law. He was honored by the Queen of England for his charitable and media work by being named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and earned features in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in the East.
